For Parents

We designed this site in hopes that children would be able to enjoy all the opportunities and excitement that come along with the Internet, while keeping safe and making the best use of the Web. Our video is geared towards children 10 and older, and we encourage you to test your knowledge out with your children by playing our game. If you make learning about staying safe an engaging and fun activity, children are more likely to learn from this resource and see Web safety in a positive light.

It's important to note that while it's vital that we ensure that our children are protected when they're online, creating fear and downplaying the importance of the Internet is not our intent. This resource is meant to help you and your children to better understand how to stay safe on the Web, and have fun while doing so. Our hope is that through this resource, you can help your children follow reasonable guidelines, and have a positive dialogue about this significant part of their lives!

Some Guidelines for Parents of Children 10-12
  • keep chat rooms off-limits at this age; cyberbullying and sexual solicitation occur more frequently on chat sites
  • speak to your children about the dangers of posting personal information online
  • encourage children to use kid-friendly search engines, like Ask for Kids and Yahooligans
  • model appropriate and considerate behaviour when you are online
  • start showing your children what Web sites are more credible and accurate they others, and explain why
  • use anti-virus software to keep your computer safe from any accidental virus downloads
  • teach your children how to use common sense and critical thinking online, rather than scaring them from ever using the Web at all
  • talk frequently with your children about their online interactions, and make sure that they aren't hiding anything serious from you
  • make it clear that harassing others or promoting hatred in any way is inappropriate, and unacceptable to take part in
