For Teachers

This resource can be used to present to your class as a tool in educating them about internet safety. The video is meant to engage them in a humorous rendition of what they should be careful about when using the internet. There is also an accompanying game that can be played after the children watch the video. This Jeopardy-style game can be played on the Web site, or you can also use it to set up a Jeopardy board to present in class so that the children can play an interactive game with their peers. This can help foster learning in a fun and engaging environment within the classroom.

The game can be designed on a board with the categories that are shown on the online game. Under the categories pouches can be created and cue cards with corresponding questions and answers to the category above it can be inserted into the pouches. The board can then be taped to a wall in the classroom and children can play in teams and pick categories that they wish to answer. We tried these on children between 10-12, and found that candy works great as a reward system, so we suggest you also incorporate this into your version of the game.

It's important that as children learn skills on how to navigate through the Internet and make the best use of a computer, that they recognize the need to take some precaution when online, just as in many areas of their lives. Rather than scaring children into viewing the Web as a place full of predators and liars, it is more helpful to equip children to understand what they need to be wary of, and how they can enjoy the Internet without while staying out of harm's way. We certainly hope that you find the resource to be useful in your classroom, and wish you luck in making the Web a safe and inviting place for your students!
